Amongst other virtues, the cube cuts short many boring games.

If you are in a running game and have an overwhelming lead but have little or no chance of a gammon, then the cube ends one game and begins the next.

And since we've all mastered checker play, the cube provides additional complexity to keep the game interesting.

And once you play with the cube, in a non-match game you HAVE to play for stakes because there is otherwise no reason to drop -- or double, for that matter.
