Thanks for all the replies. I doubt I'll ever warm up to cube play, but at least I understand why others use it. I'll just keep teaching people old variants and build my own community of backgammon players who enjoy finishing games without the cube forcing resigns. If you haven't tried other variants I'd highly recommend it. Checker play in variants like Greek Acey Deucey is nothing like standard backgammon and hardly even comparable.
