In the words of two of the greatest

1. What does the number of players that play backgammon have anything to do with whether or not playing with a cube makes the game more interesting and exciting? This is not a logical argument. The fact that there are fewer players now than in 1970 has nothing to do with the use of the cube.
2. I have tried other variants, and I have even invented a few. And they are all fun and have their merits and I like them simply for the variety and the new challenge of trying to figure out a new game. I even think a couple of the variations are even better games than the current game, and I would gladly play in those tournaments or chouettes if they were available...but they are not. (Nackgammon is one excellent example--I believe it is a more interesting game that the standard game, but again, I can't find many games).
One variation I have tried is playing without the cube. It's silly to play a variation that is clearly less fun and stimulating. (I'd rather have sex with my clothes on than off, and once I tried it with my clothes on, that was enough for me.)
