I can play BG for free and have fun, however i have only played BG for a few years, a few years back. Then started I back playing ~6 months ago. I'm studying and working to become a better player. When I do something I like to be good at it no matter what it is.
I have played pool for 30+ years and I cant stand playing for free-the game has no purpose to me anymore, unless i'm getting lessons from a world class player or giving lessons to a lesser player(something I enjoy). I can play socially with a friend for a hour or 2 on the rare occasion. My point is after 30+ years, the honeymoon is long over.
If its worth doing, its worth doing for money. Not playing pool for $$$ to me is a waste of time. Because i have payed my dues. No, i'm not a world class player i just can't get there, however I play to the best of my potential and that's pretty good in most peoples opinion. Not mine tho, i still study and practice pool-because the action drives me to. If there was no action i'd give up pool(which is kinda happening).
I think after the honeymoon wears off in anything, the $$$, action, is a good way of keeping a players attention and interest in BG. Its also a way to keep score. Who is the best? the player who wins the most $$$ when the heat is on IMO, not PR. It's human nature to want to win $$, its survival, we are hard wired to survive. So when $$$ is added to the game it brings out the killer instinct and gives purpose and meaning to the game. When someone is getting or giving lessons there is still a exchange of $$, thus validating my point: if its worth doing its worth doing for $$$.
Speaking for myself in BG i'm still learning, i'm not looking for action yet, however when i get to the point I know I have a shot to win (not a lock) just a fair game i'll be looking for action. And I'm not a gambler in casino's cause that's a suckers bet.
That's how I see it. This applies to most games and the theory of game's.
