I don't follow how you get eight rolls. Looks to me that worst rolls with maximum wastage is seven rolls.

Yes, you have the trick of 2/1 with the ace and with the larger number playing a checker off the 1pt, but you can only use that trick ONCE from the 2pt (when it has been diminished to one checker).
