On second thought, I don't think my earlier comments about "range" is particularly relevant.
A chess player's rating is an indication of his playing strength based on his results against players at various levels. Both Nack and Timothy Chow have already pointed out that the same expected score in chess, because of the possiblity of a draw, can be achieved in more than one way. A player with a very aggressive style will tend to have more decisive results in his games but in the long run should achieve the same expected score as a player who is rated about the same and with a different playing style.
So, I will try to think first and babble later.
