Time penalty vs. Point penalty

I understand that while chess is a different game and points have a different value than in backgammon, the point penalty is more "final" in backgammon. While someone can still catch up on time, itīs more difficult in a limited match to catch up with points.
Another aspect of penalty points, in a different context than being late to start a match, is how to attribute them if you must.
Do you add a point to the opponentīs score of the infracting player or do you deduct a point from the score of the infracting player? Both are penalty points but there is a huge difference and the value of the penalty and its consequence might be enormously different in each case, depending on the score...
Inputs please...
