No, "slight" is not the way I would describe our disagreement.
The foundation of your argument is this assertion:
"...you are expected to do everything you can to win within the rules."
Sticking with the current US Backgammon Tournament Rules & Procedures, since that is where the NLM language is, what is the source of that assertion? If it's not in the rules, then it cannot be used to argue that "the rules" require us to take advantage of our opponent's mistakes.
Your opinion is that you should take advantage of your opponent's mistakes when playing NLM. The fact is that the rules do NOT say that. They simply say that you have the option of doing so.
