This sounds like question that might be answered reasonably well with a simulation. Maybe something like this:
Define the "effectiveness" of a tournament as: the average rating of the champion it produces. So a "more effective" format (or set of rules) produces a stronger champion on average than a less effective one.
How is tournament effectiveness affected by the value of compensation given for byes? Or does it make any difference? (Presumably, a goal of backgammon tournaments is to maximize effectiveness.)
Does is matter if the tournament uses a hard cutoff (e.g., you're out after 3 losses) or a percentage cutoff (e.g., the bottom 25% drop out each round)?
