Even if we assume everyone's chance of winning a match is 50/50, I don't think half a point is sufficient compensation for a bye. To win a tournament, you have to do significantly better than 50/50. A half-point bye robs you of one of your limited chances to outperform expectation. To put it another way, in a 6-round Swiss, do you have a better chance of cashing if you play 6 matches, or if you receive 6 half-point byes?

The distinction between half point and full point byes only becomes relevant when we have to start awarding a second bye to people. That can't happen much, and when it does, it happens in the waning hours of the tournament.

If nobody ever gets a second bye, then clearly getting a bye of any kind is a good thing.
