Note-taking is distracting at a minimum. Should the opponent be required to stop what he is doing and inspect the notes, each and every time, to decide whether it is a "harmless" note or not?

Forfeiture without a warning would be draconian. But if you ignore two warnings, it's hard for me to have much sympathy.

As for "is this how you want to win?" I haven't seen it anywhere that the opponent asked for him to be forfeited. I assume he just wanted the director to ask him to stop making notes. But on the second warning he had specifically been told he would be forfeited if he did it again.

According to the article, his coaches and teammates had been warning him for YEARS not to do this, and he just shrugged it off. I do not know this young man at all, but hopefully learning that actions have consequences will serve him well in life.
