There is a significant element of personality to it. I really enjoyed watching Mochy club you like a baby seal.

... and I would have enjoyed watching you club Mochy like a baby seal.

The lopsided match with a spot was interesting but the side commentary and general playfulness made it fun to watch. (The first time I watched it I simply watched it for fun).

I think Stick's comment is more along the lines of "What in it for the Player?".

For the community of Backgammon presenting open class play is a big motivator to learning and taking part in the game. For the players who play consistently under a PR of 3 I'm not sure what their motivations to player other players of similar skill is other than the social aspect.

Hustlers have always played weaker players and the sharks generally avoid playing each other. Tournament play is often the only venue where sharks will play each other and the winner is essentially random.

If you are playing to win the best thing to do is only play the weak.
