Thanks, Ian, for your prompt and detailed response.

It is oddly tedious to compare models because sometimes the Lenovo IdeaPad 700 is called the Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 or just the Lenovo Y700, the names are practically interchangeable. I kept re-checking the specs and hoped I could glean which model was referenced at a particular site. I'll still call them #1 and #2 for our purposes.

My decision seemed like a close choice based on your impressive notes, but I went with your original choice of #2, and went online to buy it from Amazon for $887.53 (one left in stock).

Amazon has a new hustle. It advertises free shipping for the laptop, but in the middle of your purchase it tells you that to get the free shipping you have to additionally buy at least $25 worth of books which are also free shipping (but even that turns out to be true about only some of the books). Anyway, I added three books to my cart, including a Smullyan book I don't yet own.

By the time I did that, the "one left in stock" was gone, and the price had inched up to $889. So I clicked on that one and completed the purchase. It seems surreal, but I checked the price after I purchased, and it has jumped to $919! I guess I can really move a market.

I do have a couple of concerns. One of them is about adding HDD later, the other about bloatware.

Difficult HDD add-on: One reviewer, who claims to be a "Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist and IT professional," said: Get a model with either a HDD or both a M.2 SSD and HDD... IF you purchase a model that has a SSD only (which mine was a M2 Samsung), the proprietary ribbon/SATA cable needed to connect an additional 2.5" HDD is not included and it is very hard to source. Lenovo at this time still does not know how to get it (???). And on the site you linked me to, the first reviewer, said: I took 2 stars off for Lenovo not including a HD connector in SSD only models... If it's just a matter of buying an external HDD later (in case I need it), fine, but I hope I can connect it!

Bloatware: One of the reviewers, who claims to be in the tech industry, said" On arrival, I immediately reinstalled Win10 using the MS Win 10 Media Creation Tool, nuking the preloaded junk and freeing up about 40gb of partitioned space for Lenovo's 'One Key Recovery'. Be sure to get the drivers for this variant, the Y700-15ISK from Lenovo. If you ever wish to use the One Key Recovery feature, do not ever repartition the boot drive under any circumstance or it will be lost, requiring sending the laptop back to Lenovo for repair to get back." That doesn't sound like a road I'd like to go down. Also on the site you linked me to, I read the first review, which confirms: ...Lots of Lenovo bloatware. Maybe that's just a standard complaint, but I've never learned how to properly deal with bloatware/nuisanceware (I'm unsure what is safe to delete).

Those are two long paragraphs, but they are dwarfed by all the positive raves and reviews I read about #2. I look forward to booting up the machine!

Thanks again,

Nack
