I don't get it!

Im afraid I don't see where the equity is lost in waiting a little before you double at 2 cube max.
In my head I see it as this:
Two evenly matched players, P1 and P2.
If P1 doubles at his first roll pretty much like Snowie at 2a/2a at lets say 51% How has he gained any equity? (if we assume 51% = 50% approx.)
If P2 doubles when he's 55% and above, surely he wins more points on average.
Efficient cubing is paramount in winning the most points possible in a given game, I just don't see where an advantage is gained by turning the cube when you're basically 50/50.
