When I said that my argument applied even more strongly to top players, I meant the overall argument that A and B don't imply the conclusion. The specific subargument about the skill spread being larger for a "mature" game that is not yet tapped out might not apply more strongly if you restrict to top players.

Regarding PR's 25 to 30 years ago, Rick Janowski posted some data on this question a couple of years ago. If we discount the players for which there is not much data, then only the top two players were averaging under 5.0.
