Backgammon, as chess, needs recording 1) to document the course of game, 2) to be used by a willing participant to study his or his opponent game 3) to help us study the underlying theory. The script of a match should be ownership of both players and can be made public by mutual consent or by the Director or the particular rules.
Backgammon rules so far lack the REQUIREMENT to record one's own match, but chess tournaments required a record with opponent's signature to claim victory or draw.
In my opinion BG match recordings should be made public on a much larger scale.
It is easily possible to use a device as the one above, to keep record of dice and even moves.
What is an acceptable price?
