I'm going to abandon my search for a mobile app and just play backgammon the way I have for decades, live and on a board. Playing the AI on my laptop has made me realise that American backgammon is not a game I want to spend a lot of time trying to learn when the variants I play now for recreation are already so much fun and haven't been analysed to death with computers. Thanks to all those who took the time to reply.
