Of course the tournament I play in US are only a few tournaments. So please correct me if I am wrong.

I also find that Nordic Open and Japan Open couldn't be compared to usual tournaments in US, because we also give buch of prizes to the achivement for the year.
(highest rating, the best win %, most contributed player etc) So ABT ceremony (held in Chicago) should be the one I should compare.

Anyway still I don't see the reason not to have the prize ceremony. It can be a very enjoyable event as well.
There might be a speech by the winners and the director, taking pictures (winners + owner of auction=big smile), show the nice trophies, big applause etc.

Sometimes I leave the tournament even without knowing the face of the winner of the tournament!
