Neil,

I think you are right that 3 equal finalists would be extremely rare. Probably less than 5% of the time. (Jason Lee's work on a true Swiss simulator may give us a better idea of the percentages.) But as a data guy, I am just paranoid enough to try and plan ahead for all of the special cases.

Joe,

I love the clean numbers using your method. I wouldn't want to explain it to Advanced division players, but I think most Open players are mathematical enough to follow it.

Thank you for the input. This does indeed help alleviate some of our worries about running the Swiss out farther. Tom, Sonya, Beth and I will use the info as we prep for this year's Wisconsin Backgammon Championships.
