Stick, I agree, in part, and disagree, in part. As a general rule, I think your statement is true. However, I think there are a great number of players, including yourself, who, in extreme circumstances, definitely adjust play to their opponent.

If one is playing some complete bozo that is clearly, grossly inferior in skill and has a known propensity for looseness with the cube, then the vast majority of experienced, skillful players are going to be much more conservative with the cube and will try to extend the length of the match. This is obvious, as the better player has an increasingly greater chance of winning with an increasingly longer match.

Let some clearly inferior player throw you a recube to 4 with some marginal gammon potential -- say early in a 11 or 13 point match. Even if it is technically a take, I suspect many times you'll concede the 2 points rather than give the weak play the chance of a freak 8 points.
