For 1-2 game, my rule of thumb, from Stick by way of Phil, is

No Double until six point cleared

Then Double / Pass

Curious to see the results.

This jump from ND to Pass (if I'm remembering right) is part of the reason a well-timed backgame can be such a strong weapon. If the other guy plays "by the book" then you only lose one point.
