Thank you, Neil, for setting me straight. I thought I had read somewhere that a 1-2 backgame is a pass once the leader has 3 points to clear due to too many gammon losses. I could not locate that reference now, so I probably imagined a thing or two. What I have found is the following reference position from "Backgammon Bootcamp" (#5-22):

White is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 160
Unlimited Game
Jacoby
pip: 58
score: 0

Blue is Player 1
XGID=-bbFED-----------bbcbb----:0:0:1:00:0:0:1:0:10
Blue on roll, cube action?

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Which is a borderline double/clear take according to the rollout at the time.
