underage participation

Children play for prize money at chess tournaments all the time. The chess tournaments I attend are approximately 50% underage. Parents are everywhere and they know that money is at stake. Prizes are usually paid by check. All of this leads me to believe it is legal. Whether or not it is wise to encourage underage participation at a typical weekend backgammon tournament is another matter. I have some reservations about it.
