Chess is different than backgammon from a legal standpoint, as well as from a perceived "wholesomeness" standpoint.

While I think children should be encouraged to play backgammon (I happen to like Phil's set of reasons for children playing), there are unsettled matters when it comes to backgammon. Further, the distinction, legally, between chess and backgammon, **literally**, varies state by state.

It isn't as simple as you and stick write, as much as I wish this wasn't the case.

I think Neal takes this a bit too far but it could be (possibly) that he's just extremely prudent in evaluating the legal issues.
