In that case it's a significant advantage to bear off to the left...

I used to worry about that, but if you have large, tournament-sized board, there is plenty of room to roll on either side.

If you are rolling into a crowded inner board, you should roll towards the bar in the center of the board rather than aiming at your opponent's checkers. That way you don't get very many rolls where a die lands on top of a checker.
