In Response To: Paul Magriel in Vegas: Sloppy Technique, Illegal Moves (Taper_Mike)

I think the reaction is too strong toward Paul's behavior OTB and I will share my side:

At 12-9 to Paul, I formed a strategic decision to pass his 4 cube for the match. I don't remember if it is on the video, but during the break someone asked me whether he was TG, and I said: "it could be but it looks like a clear take". I was aware of his poor time control and stress due to less than 30 seconds that he had left on his clock. This decision has partly proved itself with poor play on trivial plays in the following games (the most obvious example was passing a cube at 1a-5a post Crawford). One of the side effects was the mentioned "sloppy technique".

His "sloppy technique", which may have violated some rules, didn't bother me and was a confirming signal to the effect of time pressure on his game. I did ask to and insisted on shaking the cup as this was a violation that had the potential of saving 1-2 seconds in every roll. Add the fact that I was investing most of my energy on my part of the game and making sure he doesn't do significant illegal moves, which I caught in time (one of them could have cost me a game and the match in the final bear-off).

Long story short, yes the technique was sloppy, but I have pointed the things that bothered me OTB. I have high respect for Paul Magriel for his contribution to the game, but those who know me should know that I am not shy of pointing things that are not in place and/or bother me. I did mentioned what bothered me when it happened, and he apologized and tried to correct it. For that reason, I think there is an over-shooting effect in the responses here. Time pressure can lead each to behave in a different way. It led Paul to violation of some rules. I pointed the ones that were significant in my view (illegal moves, shaking the cup).
