Timothy Chow wrote "I know that for myself, I would not do the calculation because I know ahead of time that there's no way I would have any more confidence in my numerical estimates than in my intuitive judgment. For a race, of course, I would calculate, but this position is too far away from any position that I know the numbers for. I'm curious as to whether any BGO readers would actually take the time OTB to do a quantitative calculation here."

I would take the time. This could be an important cube action decision and I'd want to do my best to get it right. I'd figure what the gammon-adjusted tp is and then deduct a lot for cube vig and come up with a true tp figure. Then try and figure out if he has a take or not. This would give me my best guess of the best theoretical cube action between two even players.

Then there's the fact that many (most?) players will take clear passes ATS and try to decide if this opponent falls into this group. If so, then probably take a roll since there's a good chance of getting a bad take later.

That would be my approach.
