I agree with your point. Another point to make is that starting 4 - 0 means that one single loss in a tournament can eliminate someone from the tourney without even cashing. Everyone else gets to lose once and keep playing.

Do you also hate how a large number of sports teams have a regular season and then playoffs with teams being virtually equal in the playoffs. For example, in NBA, Golden State at probably 73 - 9 will have to win as many games as Houston at probably 41-41 to win the title? Somehow it seems fine there but not for backgammon.
