In Response To: Backgammon Ethics Questions (Marv Porten)

Before we even get to A, my opponent has already erred in talking on my time, which is at best an honest error with no ill will intended, or downright poor ethics if he is hoping that his remark will adversely influence my decision.

A. When deciding whether to double what I think is a clear take, I will still in general factor in the possibility that my opponent will err and drop. If I think that his remark is a true sign that he is likely to drop, there is nothing unethical in using this as an incentive to double (whether it is smart is another question)

B. No he shouldn't. Taking the cube back is not even allowed, and again an offer to do so is at best an error, and at worst poor ethics. He may if he wish correct his count and tell me about it - now that he is on his own time - but it would be better not too.

C. He is, doubly so, again for talking on my time, and he is now even admitting that this is not an error on his part but pure gamesmanship. Not good. He can expect no favours from now on...
