If we insist on coming up with short names for everything in order to simplify the process of writing about backgammon, then your suggestion is a million times better than the other proposals in the thread.

Why is it better? It is better because you don't need big, complex manuals to read it. "Infield" and "outfield" makes sense intuitively.

I think it is silly going to great lengths to optimize the process of writing about backgammon, when it means losing the understanding of the reader (unless the reader has bothered to read and grasp the manuals first).
