Back board, uh uh, does not work for me. Something that is back of something cannot be visible right in front of you.

"Back" just means it is further away from you (or the indicated player). For example, we already refer to a "back game," "back checkers" or the "back quadrant," all within plain sight.

"Back board" (though rarely if ever used yet) is a synonym for "back table" (sometimes used) or "back quadrant" (more often used), just as "inner board" (often used) is a synonym for "inner table" and "inner quadrant," and "outer board" (often used) is a synonym for "outer table" and "outer board."

There has been some confusion in this thread over the meaning of "board." For clarification: According to the glossary in Backgammon Openings (and likewise in that of the Backgammon Galore site and other glossaries), the first two (of the three) definitions of "board" and the definition of "quadrant" are

    Board

1. The playing surface of all twenty-four points (plus the bar).
2. One quarter of the playing surface, composed of six points. [For example] Each player has an inner board and an outer board.

    Quadrant

One of the four quarters of the board. Synonym for Board (definition 2).

Hope that helps.

Nack
