Definition of board

In Response To: Midboard: an alternate term for "opponent's outer board" (Nack Ballard)

The traditional definition of "board" is one of the two folding halves of a backgammon backgammon board. The "inner board" is the board nearer the light, which both players bear off from. And the "outer board" is the other half.

To refer to a quadrant you specify either the near side (player's side) or far side (opponent's side) of one of the two boards.

But English is a living language and terms can take on new meanings with time. So maybe today it is more common to think of board as a synonym for quadrant. Anyway, I think the term "board" can be a little confusing.

I like the idea of using quadrant (or quad) instead. It is pretty clear what quadrant means. And you can name them your "home quadrant", "second quadrant", "third quadrant", and "fourth quadrant" (or "back quadrant").
