While many posts here correctly grasp that there is no mathematical difference, there is an important financial difference. If the series ends after 5 games, with the 2-3-2 format, the higher seeded team will have only two home gates, whereas with 2-2-1-1-1, the higher seeded team will have three. Home gates in the playoffs are not insignificant. I'd even rather see 3-3-1 to realize this difference even in the event of a sweep. Doing 4-3 maximizes home gates for the higher seeded team, but has the unfortunate by-product of giving the lower seeded team the home field for a 7th game -- something that most fans would see as ludicrous.
