The intent of the rules is the same as with the old rules. If you move and then you clearly make a move to pick up your dice, you cannot go back and change the move. Why? Because that action could induce your opponent to make a premature roll. Also, after it appears that you have made your move, your opponent may have made a move toward the doubling cube, and your action induced him to do this. Or, after you have given the appearance of finishing your move, you might have noticed or heard a reaction of a spectator (or friend) that caused you to have second-thoughts. Note that this is NOT a rule change...it is simply a clarification of the existing rules.

However, if you have rolled a 6-5 and not moved at all, and move the dice out of the way of where you are going to move your checkers, your move will not have ended if you are playing legal moves. With the old rules, you would lose your turn if you repositioned the dice without announcing that you were doing that. Horrible penalty for a silly little mistake of moving the dice out of your way. But if you do make a legal move and you want to think about it some more, you had better not make a clear move to pick up the dice or cover the dice without announcing that is what you are doing so that everyone is alerted that you and not done thinking.

Of course, non of this is a problem if you play with a clock and a single pair of dice, as the only way to end your turn is by hitting the clock when a clock is in use.
