Notwithstanding Phil's intransigence on this matter, in the face of clear evidence to the contrary, the answer is:

It is sometimes correct, from a purely equity-driven standpoint, to take what would otherwise be a drop in an attempt to retain the box. The situations do not arise frequently. Incorrect takes to retain the box are frequent. In order to correctly take a drop you must be able to accurately assess the other players' ability as well as your own.
