Is chess really so much less about [patterns, looking right, comparing different images]?

The problem in backgammon is rolls of doubles. (If there were no doubles, then touch move in bg might be ok.) Because you have four moves to play a candidate position in bg can be very different from the current one, and there may be hundreds to choose from.

So it's not that chess is less about those things; it's that those things are easier to do in games where you have only one piece to move.
