I like your idea, Barry. It is simple and direct.

A slightly more accurate assessment requires a tedious calculation of the "fair buy-back price." That number changes depending on how many entrants there are as well as the number of buy-backs. Thus, the fair price is different in a tourney with 26 original entrants from one with 28 entrants, even if they both have 4 buy-backs.

Most tournament directors pick a price that is close, but they do not vary it depending the exact number of entrants and buy-backs.

From my earlier post:

Fair Buy-back Rate

The difference between a player’s equity at the initial draw, and his equity after losing in Round 1 of Main gives the amount of equity he has lost. This is the amount of equity he is repurchasing in a buy-back.

Equity( Lost ) = Equity( Initial Draw ) – Equity( After Losing Round 1 of Main )

The quotient of these two gives the fair buy-back rate:

Fair Buy-back Rate = Equity( Lost ) / Equity( Initial Draw )

This rate is the weight that Ken would use in a perfect world.
