How different is rebuys to auctioning off byes to people who are willing to pay (and thus even out the equity part of the advantage from a bye)?

From a sporting perspective they are not to be preferred (rebuys), but in all other aspects they doesn't seem so bad.

Except that - in Denmark/DBgF - rebuys are illegal according to the gambling law (because they make it less obvious to participants what the total cost of joining a tournament are up front, and because rebuys can be difficult to handle to people who are gambling addicts.

Just wanted to add that, so you know why you never see rebuys at Danish events/Nordic Open. Not even in the side events.
