Not True

Your assumption that the main purposed of clocks is not to hold up the tournament is not entirely true. That is one benefit of the use of clocks. Another is the mechanics of the move and the application of either legal or non leagal moves.
But the most important affect of clocks is that it adds a skill-set to the game...the ability to allocate your time appropriately during the match, and the ability to keep players from playing too slowly overall.
If two players are allowed to play without the clock, they are playing a match under conditions that the rest of the players do not have. Now, for the finals, if the TD wants to, he can decide not to use clocks, but even there I think it is terrible to do this, as again, the match could take forever which is not fun for the spectators, the overall popularity of the game, and for an opponent is has to wait forever for his opponent to move. Also, they entered the tournament thinking that part of the skill of the game will be time allocation, and they should be playing the finals the same way to keep the integrity of the tournament.
But again, you have given a lovely example as to why LM is better, and I thank you for that.
