Better Recognition for the Streaming Staff

In Response To: Better Recognition for the Streaming Staff (David Presser)

I have never watched a streaming BG match -- it seems like a great idea, but it's just not something I've had a great deal of interest in doing.

When I went to the NY Metro tournament in January, as a relative newcomer to the BG tournament scene outside Boston, I met Michelle for the first time, she just made me feel like a million dollars, and I can't even remember why. Just friendly, and enthusiastic, and welcoming, and making me feel like a part of the scene, even though for all she knew I might be the biggest asshole in Boston.

I think I'm right in recalling that my Open match with Senk was streamed. And after the event, it turns out it all got transcribed and I got the quite exciting benefit of having an XG analysis of my match delivered so I could see for real how bad I sucked (not too bad, as it turned out -- respectably inferior).

At the end of the event, there was a fishbowl tip jar 'for streaming' - and I put a $20 in there, but I wasn't sure what or who it was going to -- Michelle? USBGF? To a fund for equipment purchase?

To me as a player, I don't really care about streaming -- having my match streamed or watching someone else's. That could change. but what I DO find really really compelling is the transcription / XG analysis. I'm wondering whether there might be an angle where the participants in a match pay a streaming / transcription / analysis fee to have their match 'processed' in this way? It does seem to me that there is a lot of excess labor going on, free of charge, that is of value to different people ion different ways. I for one would pay $20 per match transcription / XG analysis file for my contests. Is there perhaps a model for charging an annual subscription fee for these files, or a one-offfor particular matches?

I am happy to contribute to these sorts of efforts in some way, but I'd have to say that I DON'T feel very comfortable with the 'tipping' approach. I think I'm popular in my local watering holes as a 'good tipper' -- but I'd much rather regard Michelle as a friend and fellow-traveller, rather than a sort of service provider in the context of BG tournament events. Michelle is not "waiting" on me, or anyone else -- and I think some of the comments in this thread show that some people have actually taken that stance toward her, which I think deserves a sharp kick in the balls.

If it's real work, it should get real pay. The pay might be modest, but it should not be at the whim of those who benefit from it.
