These are exactly the type of people I was talking about originally. I think I threw everyone off with my sarcastic 'math geniuses'. I didn't realize people would take me literally for once.

Just because they are good backgammon players doesn't mean the math aspect hasn't held them back from being great. That is essentially what I was saying. There are a lot of good players with super strong math backgrounds but at the top there are far fewer than you'd expect and I don't believe it's because they haven't put in the hours.
