No attack on anyone intended, just my opinion:
You mention an objective stance, and looking for the facts of the investigation. That is what is required in court. Outside court, within a community? I think something else is required of us. I'd weigh the fact that we have been part of the same community for years, that we have mutual friends who I respect and whose judgment I respect, and I don't need to weigh any facts of an investigation (which might not be there). Rod is part of our community deserves our support, not our doubt. So no calls for a resignation or anything like that from me.
There should be a lot of evidence of wrongdoing before I'd change that stance. The article in that newspaper does not provide any evidence of a crime, and does not provide any evidence of wrongdoing by Rod. For me, that is no basis at all to have any doubts about Rod. Does that mean that I am subjective? Yes, it does mean that. Based on the fact that we have been part of the same community for many years.
If some newspaper would write something like this about me, and friends and people I have known for many years would call for my resignation from some official position on the basis of that (even if temporarily), I would be angry and upset.
