Some of the situations cited by Phil are illegal moves and some are not. I doubt if even St. Francis of Assisi would have let an opponent correct a failure to hit or retract a double just because he didn't know he had a checker on the bar. But picking up dice while on the bar is an illegal move, and the rules do not require you to let that move stand. That said, being no saint, I have certainly allowed illegal moves to stand, just as my opponents have done to me.
