It is easy to judge harshly when it is somebody else’s money. That is why I have tried to bring this discussion home to backgammon. Take, for instance, the Nordic Open. It was just completed recently, and this year, there was some sponsorship money supporting the prizes. Given that there were some cover in the rules to provide wiggle room for the referee, let me ask directly:
Do you think that a punctilious enforcement of rules that would cause sponsorship contributions to fall by half at the Nordic Open would be a good thing?
For me, the answer is easy for me. Take the money. Sure, the stars operate under a double standard. So, what? The world isn’t perfect. On balance, backgammon is better served when sponsors are helping out. If the stars get a break because that’s what it takes to assure a larger audience, then, on balance, it is a good thing.
BTW: Tiger isn’t the only one getting a break. NBA referees are famously reluctant to call a 6th foul on the superstars, and rightly so. The 6th foul means ejection from the game. When fans pay $100 a seat (and more), they come to see the stars. Giving them what they want is good for the game; players, owners, and fans alike.
