Headphones while playing in live BG tournaments

I'll assume you're referring to:

1.5 AIDS. Once a match is in progress, players shall not use written, mechanical or electronic aids except to keep score.

Classifying headphones as an *aid* is a stretch. I was even told before by Falafel that I should stop listening to music and be serious when I play. You can argue they're an aid in that they allow you to drown out other noise creating a constant comfortable background noise for you to think in. I don't think this is what the rule was intended for. How long have the ABT rules been in effect compared to how long the population has readily/easily worn headphones like they do now? In the last 10 years there has been a huge surge thanks to Steve Jobs Inc.

If I knew before a tournament that I wouldn't be allowed to wear headphones while playing I wouldn't attend that tournament.

This is the first time it has ever struck me out of the blue when referencing them but the length of the ABT rules seemed obnoxiously short.
