In Response To: What Would the Ruling Be? (Steve Mellen)

Steve Mellen: Okay, in my newfound capacity as a cheater, I now realize that any time my opponent inadvertently knocks over a die, I am entitled to enforce the numbers that are now showing if they are to my advantage. Hey, don't call me a cheater - it's my opponent who is the rulebreaker here!

Well, yeah, but I think you've got the wrong side of the coin.

I'm saying that a clever cheater might roll something lousy, quickly whip some checkers around and "inadvertently" change one of the dice before you even knew what happened.

Since we know who was involved, we all know there is no way in a bazillion years that is what happened. But we've all heard some pretty interesting stories over the years, and there MIGHT be one or two characters lurking around who try such things.

A lot of backgammon rules are in place to prevent cheating. I think the rule that says you may not touch the dice is a good example.

Finally, I know you were being mildly sardonic in your last post -- we all really hope that the players can resolve things on their own and not try to exercise the letter of the law. All I am saying is, all else being absolutely equal, and in the absence of the players being able to reach an equitable resolution on their own, in this situation, the director MUST rule against the player who knocked the dice.
