what is copyrightable?

I think one thing that ought to be said in this context of this thread is that we are talking in the immediate instance about a piece of backgammon scholarship that is being offered for free.
Clearly, neither Jeremy nor Stick seem to be motivated by the prospect of generating income through their writing. The ‘currency’ here isn’t dollars, it’s, I would guess, the inherent pleasure of being able to contribute something meaningful to the historical development of a beloved game and the prestige / appreciation from peers that comes with being a respected backgammon authority. (And to be clear, I don't necessarily read Stick's post as an actual complaint against Jeremy, but as a general question).
So I think the more important issue -- or at least a different one from the legal line -- is about expressing appropriate respect to previous writers and teachers. One of the things I immediately liked about Jeremy's article is precisely that he charted the historical context of approaching this topic -- I thought he gave appropriate 'shout outs'.
In fact, though I had the pleasure of meeting Stick this year in San Antonio, and I've appreciated his helping me to access this site, I was unaware of his exploration of this topic in writing -- so at least in this reader's case, Jeremy's article has served to enlarge Stick's reputation by building on and citing his work.
So, thanks to both writers! And to *all* writers who share their backgammon insights, especially 'for free' as so many do here every day.
