Consider multiple divisions

My advice is that Backgammon organizers think big. Let's presume that someday backgammon will become enormously popular [thanks to promoters of the game like Phil Simborg] and that some tournaments may have as many as 500 people. What's the best way to handle that? I suggest putting the top 64 into Division 1, the next 64 into Division 2, the next 64 into Division 3, etc. The entry fee for each division would be the same. Price money and rake would slightly skewed to encourage people to strive to make a higher division. Skill level would ideally be a person's PR.

I used to run an IBM employee golf tournament using this "sliced bread" approach, and the results were amazing. In my first year I had 108 entrants. In my last year (12 years later) I had 308 entrants. In that last year we had 23 men's divisions, a woman's division, and a youth division. It can be done.
