Hmmm...
1. The purpose of a clock is to make sure that matches proceed at a fair pace. Losing on time is a possibility if you play too slow. The purpose of a clock is NOT to punish players who are playing fast enough but forget to punch the clock.
2. Are you serious that move 1 never ended and that "he has been handling the dice and checkers in an illegal manner during the time of his first roll" is a reasonable interpretation of a situation where one makes a move that is legal (except for not punching the clock), then rolls the dice as opponent cannot play, proceeds to make a legal play according to the dice rolled (except for not punching the clock), etc? Is this a common way of "handling the dice and checkers in an illegal manner"? Or is it more reasonable to interpret this as forgetting to punch the clock? When showing this on a video or describing it, how many backgammon players do you think will describe this as playing one turn illegally, and how many as forgetting to punch the clock? Also your compatriot (Michel, right) in his description did not say this was one turn handled illegally.
3. Of course the way Steve (? Keep forgetting the names) handled this is the same as was done for many decades, when no clock and two pairs of dice were used. I'd therefore consider this a mechanical error in ending turns, probably a return to an old habit, while the intent is clear: roll dice, make a move, finish the move, roll the dice again, etc.
4. I think Michel (?) should have warned his opponent (but he was honest in being clear about what happened), and has an obligation to do so under legal moves and believe Rory's solution was fair.
5. Many posters here have been at pains to say that after realizing who it was, that they did not question his integrity.
6. I don't know Rory (or for that matter any of the people involved) but would not question his integrity.
