In Response To: From my "5pt vs. 3pt" folder... (Timothy Chow)

TC>> How is it a "big problem" with my idea that it takes some effort to accomplish? You want to improve without any effort?

I don't mind investing effort to improve. But I do prefer to prioritise my learning.

I (and possibly others) would aim for the reward in improvement to at least be proportional to the hours I put in capturing, organising and analysing the moderately large amount of data and labour required to draw a reasonably accurate conclusion.

If making the 3pt vs the 5 is only correct, say, 10% of the time even for 'tough' decisions (i.e. within -0.06), and for 'non-tough' decisions, only 1% of the time, I may decide to prioritise learning another area of improvement which I will encounter more frequently (for example 3rd roll responses).

To my mind, it's better to have a rough idea of what sort of reward will be gained before embarking on a large body of work. This is why I didn't think it was unreasonable for me to ask for an estimate.

Also..

TC>> I can't, and even if I could, I don't think that this would be particularly useful information.

to me seems to somewhat contradict..

TC>> It's not because I don't have enough data to calculate a meaningless number (36 positions is enough—you don't need 1000); it's that I don't see the point of calculating a meaningless number and reporting it.

which contradicts..

TC>> The only algorithm that makes sense is to choose the 5pt if X > 50 and to choose the 3pt if X < 50.

I am still hopeful that future backgammon software will be able to collate historical errors in a more efficient way and offer suggestions for improving my gameplay automatically. In this age of computers, the data for each of my many historical move errors exists but currently cannot be extracted and categorised easily.

Thank you for your input anyway.
